Lionel Messi scored a penalty in the first half for the Argentine management before Alexis Sanchez of Chile equalized for their World Cup qualifier in a 1-1 draw on Thursday.

Messi turned around in the middle of the first half after Guillermo Maripan dropped Lautaro Martinez in the box. Former Arsenal and Man Utd midfielder Sanchez equalized in the 37th minute, finishing off a cross from Gary Medel.

The draw means that Argentina have never lost at home to Chile in 35 matches, and have played 12 games without a win since losing to Brazil in the 2019 Copa America semi-finals.

Argentina is second in the top 10 in South America against Qatar 2022 with 11 points from five games, a point behind Brazil, who play Ecuador on Friday.

Chile are in sixth place, with five points from five games.
